Report from this year’s implementation of Daymar Rally 2955
In the autumn of 2954, recruitment to the Bluetech Racing Team began. Where most of the participants from last year registered for another chance to eat some sand from Daymar’s dunes. Bluetech never got the opportunity to register another team, but our hope is always there. Would have been fun to participate in all three divisions (bike, buggy and truck) sometime in the future.
Our road to Daymar began with a few planned training sessions as our goal this year was to get up on the podium. However, it turned out that the team had a lot of other IRL activities booked so some training had to be cancelled but at least there was some training driving. The total training distance was about 50 km. Which is very little if you compared to 510 km which is the total length of the Daymar Rally. The training for this year’s Daymar Rally was simply to bring out merits from before and simply drive on them.
On January 18, 2955, the team gathered at Chard’s home, which was responsible for this year’s base camp. It was a loaded team that came and started rigging the competition equipment. Unfortunately, Ronn81 had to cancel as neck problems had arisen when he had fallen out of bed during the night. This meant that the team was now down to three individuals (Powel, Chard and Spandrel) and the pre-registered reserves unfortunately had no opportunity to participate. Hagbard_ml was responsible for the excellent video documentation of the entire race. But as I said, if you have merits from the past, it will probably work.
After the Race Meeting and Pre-Tournament Briefing, party invites began in the lobby and server after server started. This year’s edition had a total of over 869 racers divided into 209 teams from 35 countries. Despite many participants, the process of getting the servers up went quickly this year. We all remember the year before when we had to wait for 5 hours before we could start trying to get to the starting line. And then drove for 57 minutes before 30k put an end to the race.
Once we had everything in place, which meant Chard and Powel were ready in racing Ursa on the start pad and Spandrel was ready in the supporter ship, we signed up ready for the race. Excitement and anticipation of how the race would go increased with each passing minute. Thoughts from last year came and went in my memory, when it all ended after 57 minutes. Would we make it to the finish line this year? The dangers are many and especially linked to the time it takes to drive. At the beginning of each race, safety is always top notch, but later, especially after about 5 hours, the field is spread out and more difficult to protect from griefers. After a while of waiting for the starting pad, a feeling of discomfort began to creep in. Several reports came in regarding collisions between supporter ships in the air above the Shubin Mining Facility. What? Is it dsync on the server or someone who wants to mess it up?
Finally, the countdown started and we set off to explode in an incredibly large fireball after about 5-7 seconds! The feeling of discomfort had been true. And the fact that Bluetech Racing suffered a dsync 7 sec into the race was a fact. While the team was trying to understand what had happened, the screens went black for Powel and Chard, who perished in the explosion when Ursa exploded. On their black screens, the text now appeared that proved that they will not wake up in the Supporter ship. The confusion increased further, and Powel stood up and exclaimed: Oh yes, that’s it! But when the screens came back to life, two half-naked men in their prime could be seen standing in the medivac Ursa inside the cargo deck of the Supporter ship. Wahooo we are still in the race!
Now it was a matter of acting quickly. On with a new uniform. Finish the next Ursa. Give landing orders to the Supporter ship. Open the cargo ramp so we can start our race again. All of this took time, and we think we lost maybe 10-20 minutes in total. Not so bad considering the length of the race and that anything can happen on Daymar.
After the dramatic and somewhat unexpected start, we now got the team going and our Ursa got up to a good speed with Chard behind the wheel and Powel in the gun turret. The team now did everything possible to regain time during the 92 km long first stage to the Eager Flats Emergency Shelter.
